The head of the union of New York corrections officers is now sounding the alarm on the dangerous conditions that now exist at one of New York City’s largest and most notorious prisons: Rikers Island.
According to Benny Boscio conditions at the understaffed jail are now so chaotic and unsafe guards are simply unable to do their jobs.
As Fox News reports:
Conditions for correction officers guarding inmates on New York City’s notorious Rikers Island have deteriorated so significantly over the past year – and have allegedly left personnel understaffed, overworked and vulnerable – that it has become “impossible” for them to do their jobs, a union official tells Fox News.
Inmate housing arrangements, understaffing of correction officers and lack of support from city officials have contributed to a dangerous work environment for those tasked with protecting the detainees and the infamous facility, Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association President Benny Boscio said.
“We’re working 25-plus hours straight, no meal breaks, the conditions of having gang members in the same housing areas – gang affiliated housing – we’re being assaulted with impunity,” Boscio told Fox News.

“Broken bones, stitches, stabbings – officers are getting stabbed. Twenty six stitches to the face, broken orbital, broken noses,” Boscio said, providing some examples of injuries officers have sustained. “We’re being seriously assaulted.”
The prison has reportedly seen a 300 percent increase in the number of officers calling in sick compared to the same time last year.

Give the order to the Staff, In the event of attack “Shoot to Kill,” this is the only thing that the scum in this prison understand, they know that there is no penalty for these crimes so they have free run of the place. Leave them locked up in their cells, no cell phone access, no TV, any and all letters and packages inspected, feed them through the bars, just like they do at most of the zoos in the country. This is not a vacation for this scum this is a punishment for committing a crime.
One problem with your suggestion (I would agree with you) is the legal system. There are shyster lawyers who make a tidy sum when one of these prisoners is harmed or killed. They can also dictate ‘rules of engagement’ to our prison staff that do little more than create the environments we’re now reading about. Handling criminals is a profession fraught with hazards, both physical and statutory. (One of our relatives was killed by an inmate in Vacaville prison) When they get to the Supermax Stage, you’re dealing with a very dangerous, cunning and unyielding psychopath. Someone like that should be executed. As far as the liberal reaction to such solutions, I’ll remind them that they relish killing unborn babies by the bushel who never harmed a fly.
Stick the shyster lawyers in the cages with their clients – that will eliminate any legal problems.
Gee, what a surprise: Criminals violating rules!! Who would have thought these people were so lawless and violent? I lived with such a person, and I was involved in illegal activities myself. You can’t give these people any quarter, because they’ll exploit the slightest advantage they can muster to regiment both the guards and inmates under their rules. I watch prison documentaries, and it’s just amazing to me how those miscreants hold sway over the staff. My sister–who is an acknowledged genius (She was even on Jeopardy!)–made a brilliant suggestion: House incorrigible prisoners in restored Russian Gulags. There are thousands of those facilities sitting idle, and we can be assured the Russian guards won’t coddle their ‘guests’ as U.S. prisons do.
