House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claims that despite China’s human rights abuses, climate change is the “overriding issue,” so the United States “must work together” with the communist country.

Pelosi laid out China’s hostile suppression of religion, democracy, free speech, and outright mass murder, while speaking at the Cambridge Union Society Moderated Conversation in the United Kingdom on Thursday.

“We’ve always felt connected to China, but with their military aggression in the South China Sea, with their continuation of genocide with the Uyghurs in Xinjiang province, with their violation of the cultural, religious priority of Tibet, with their suppression of democracy in Hong Kong and other parts of China as well, they’re just getting worse in terms of suppression and freedom of speech,” she detailed.

“So human rights, security, economically. Having said all of that,” she continued. “We have to work together on climate.”

Pelosi noted that she had traveled back and forth to China, where she claims that she is considered “the most unpopular American in China,” which she wears “with a badge of honor,” because the two nations have been “fighting for a long time.”

“Climate is an overriding issue and China is the leading emitter in the world, U.S. too, developed world too, but we must work together,” Pelosi explained. “So we have to have a level of communication on whether it’s COVID-19, whether it’s terrorism, whether it’s climate. We still have to have some communication and dialogue with China on that.”

During the conversation, the House Speaker referred to conservatives as “cult” members. “Take back your party,” she addressed towards her “Republican friends,” which Pelosi claims she does have. “You now have been hijacked by a cult that is just not good for our country.”

“Do not let it be dominated by those who want to suppress the vote because they have no positive message to win,” which she alleged was the only way Republicans could win.

Pelosi further claimed that the majority of Americans support background checks for guns, “but not the members of Congress,” and said that it was the “same thing” with climate change and women’s right to choose.

“So take back your party so it’s more of a reflection of Republicans in the country than of allegiance to the former president,” she concluded.
