Southwest airlines is now reportedly experiencing a major crisis in scheduling and has been forced to cancel thousands of upcoming flights.
As The New York Post reports:
Southwest Airlines canceled hundreds more flights Monday after the airline was forced to ground nearly 2,000 flights over the weekend, blaming the issues on weather and staffing amid speculation that the debacle is tied to the company’s recent COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
The world’s largest low-cost carrier canceled almost 350 flights — or one in ten scheduled departures — as of Monday at 7 a.m. ET, according to data from Flight Aware. That marks the highest cancellation rate of any major US airline by far, according to the site.

The mass cancelations and delays on the busy Columbus Day weekend come after the airline announced last week that it would require all of its employees to get the COVID-19 vaccine, as called for by President Joe Biden earlier this year.Employees must get vaccinated before Dec. 8 or face termination. The Dallas, TX-based airline has approximately 56,000 employees.

A spokesman for Southwest denied the allegations that the mass cancellations were linked to the implementation of the vaccine mandate however.

I call Southwest “McAirline”. They’re a great carrier, but the fact is that an irreducible number of mishaps occur when your trade is transportation. They’ve got fairly good sticks in the pointy ends of their 737s, so it might be a while before they suffer a major mishap.

I respect those who had walked out of airline service. It is against the law for the President to mandate a requirement or lose your job. I am a Southwest member and have flown often happily with this airline. Even though I would like to fly to see my son, daughter, grand daughter, her husband and a 4 year old bright little great granddaughter and now a two week old ( little brother) great grandson, and my grandson and his wife and their 3 month old (my great grandson) at Christmas time, the last time I saw any of them was in September, 2019, I would love to see them all again. I am 79 years young and hope my husband and I could see them sometime during this Christmas season. Thanks to all of you for your service and dedication to do the right thing.
